Mill Lane Bistro

Myself and the boyfriend always go to the same tried and tested eateries in our local area but always walk past different restaurant and say we should check it out. Due to the beautiful weather we were on a mission last Friday to find the last little spot of sun to enjoy a drink and feel the last of the rays before winter starts to take hold.

Traipsing up the high street passing all the full tables in the shade we remembered a little place off the main drag - Mill Lane Bistro. We have popped in for a drink but never food so up we went and was chuffed to discover free tables in the sun. We set ourselves down and enjoyed a very reasonably priced glass of the house sauvignon, which was delicious... but eventually the smells from the kitchen lured us inside.

The place is set up to look like an intimate french bistro with dark wooden tables, half burnt candles, the menu written on a blackboard and old fashioned ceramic beer jugs along high shelves. Going in from the bright sunshine to the bistro is like stepping in to another world, we were transported to the traditional Parisian bistro we found on Île Saint-Louis a few years ago.

We started with a great selection of bread, there was three different kinds and lots of it served with olive oil to drizzle over it. we were then both torn between two dishes on the relatively small menu - the duck or the guinea fowl. I let Mat choose first (for a change) and he went for the guinea fowl which was served with mushrooms, rice and a creamy sauce, the guinea fowl was a bit dry and on the small side but the flavour of the sauce and mushrooms really lifted this dish. I had choose better going for the duck confit which had a crispy skin but was so moist inside, plus the red wine sauce was slightly caramelised and sweet and complimented the sautéed potatoes amazingly.

We were stuffed so skipped dessert... but this experience has taught us is to move away from our regular restaurants and attempt to discover some new ones.
